Apples Don't Grow on Trees by SubjectNumber2394 Apples Don't Grow on Trees by SubjectNumber2394
This one is a loose Malcolm in the Middle reference, but you don't need to have seen it to get the comic. I'll try and avoid using too many references in future but this worked too well to pass up.

Scene being referenced:
Hal: "Dewey, go easy on the orange juice. That stuff doesn't grow on trees - wait, it does. So why is it so damn expensive?"

I'm hoping to keep up a weekly comic thing because comics are great drawing practise. Especially when it comes to expressions as the characters face usually needs to change in almost every frame.

It's a play on the phrase "Money doesn't grow on trees" meaning money is not easy to get and needs hard work to achieve. Applejack puts a lot of hard work into her apples (her source of income), which does grow on trees. So she's asking why it's so hard to grow apples.

In the episode "Secret of my Excess," Spike goes on a theft spree. One of the targets is Applejack's orchards. Her apples and leaves are stolen by him.

In this comic she is complaining about how expensive it is to run the farm, then realizes that her product literally grows on trees, so it shouldn't be so hard to do her job.

Of course this overlooks the cost of water for the trees and labor to pick the apples.

hmm... why isn't Applejack rich? She should have got a LOT of money from Pinkie cuz Pinkie bought a LOT of Cider in one episode, and not to mention the entire line of ponies who bought the apple family's Cider.

How come Pinkie is rich? She spends half her money on parties and usually eats everything she or Mr and Mrs. Cake bakes. WHERE IN EQUESTRIA DOES SHE GET ALL THE MONEY SHE SPENDS???

Where does fluttershy get money? Um... I guess she gets a little amount for taking care of somepony else's pet when they get sick, but even so, HOW IN PONYVILLE DOES SHE GET MONEY TO FEED ALL THOSE ANIMALS???

Umm.. i don't doubt rarity being rich though, considering she gave clothes to those fashion ponies, clothes with diamonds and other sparkly stuff embedded on them :/

And again i repeat, WHY IS APPLEJACK, THE HARDWORKING PONY IN PONYVILLE, SO DARN POOR EH?

Applejack - I think it's just that they're so family orientated and honest that they don't charge much more than it takes to grow them so their profits are quite small.

Pinkiepie - It's Pinkie, she probably just gets it from some dimension or has some sort of secret cupcake sales going on.

Fluttershy - From what I've seen, a lot of the animals feed themselves or on each other (Fluttershy giving fish to the otters), but I imagine she gets reimbursed for what she spends on food, considering she's looking after the local wildlife.

Rarity - I think Rarity would have quite a bit of money behind her, although a lot of it would go into her business, including materials and gems which would be quite costly.

Twilight - Is a student, coffee and noodles (or daisy sandwiches) for her.

Just how I see them anyway :)

Except Rarity doesn't buy gems, she goes out into the outskirts of Ponyville and digs for them.

As Applejack said in that same episode though, most of that "chest full of money" goes into maintaining Sweet Apple Acres through the winter, which leads me to suspect the same thing as SubjectNumber2394; the Ponyville branch of the Apple family probably doesn't charge much more for the sale of their products than it takes to make them in the first place, which means that their profits aren't exactly huge.

i wonder how they FIRST started to make their apple farm... if they're so poor now, where the heck did they get the money to start it in the first place? :O

It should be noted that the land upon which Sweet Apple Acres is built was originally part of the Everfree Forest, and was granted to the Smith family by Princess Celestia around a century or two ago; until their first Zap Apple harvest, the show indeed portrays their farm as barely getting off the ground. ;)

Well, I also find it very weird how is the money stuff work in ponnyvile.

I mean, Applejack work realy hard and supply whole town with food, and she have no competition, so they should be rather rich if I can say so.

Twilight only job is to run Librery, and it is not like anyone go there and read the books, the only explanation is that as Celestia student Twilight get bits for food, maintaining Librety and her private needs.

Rarity job seems to be very stabile, gathering gems and materials for making clothes.

Rainbow Dash work as weather manager, but it should pay alot less than Applejack job, not to mention she finish her job so fast that she sleep on the job almost all time ( for someone so athletic and fastest ponny in show, she sure is lazy ).

And this leave 2 ponnys who I have no idea where they get any money from:

Flutthershy is taking care of alot animals, it sure must be expensive, I do not see anythink else than selling chicken eggs to gain any money for sush expenses.

PinkyPie - how is she so rich ? she eat 6 times more than any other ponnys, even if she works as baker, probably 50% of food she bake end up in her stomach, in many episodes she buy alot off food, not to mention that she paid tons of bits for so much Cinder in one episode, and making a partys sure is very expensive as well, not that anyone pay her for making partys.

So my questions are:
Why so hard working Applejack is not rich ponny or mafia family boss yet ?
Do Twilight Sparcle realy get any money from Celestia or for working in librery since almost no one use it ?
Why PinkyPie have so much money since her life is very expensive ?
How can Fluttershy have money for food for so many animals ?
Why Twilight Sparcle finaly not get a real usefull job > ( I mean, she help her friends often, but I would not call it hard work, with her magic power she can gather apples and do Applejack day work in 2 hours, she can lift and transport heavy stuff faster than 10 Earth ponnys together.

Pinkie Pie gets supported by her parents. Rock farming brings the real money.
Ponys don't really need clothing or cake, but if they should ever run out of rocks, the kingdom is doomed.

CommanderEX Featured By Owner Apr 15, 2012
Well, most of ponnyvile buildings, if not all are made from wood, only main citys use better material, and rock itself is nto already suitable building material, it require to increase it is quality.
But I think your theory make sense, after all mining build materials seems kind of importan.
But even so, PinkyPie parrents must work realy realy hard to pay up for all PinkyPie needs, not to mention partys she organize.

If hard working Applejack and BigMac what sell food to entire town with no competition have troubles with money ( she should be Mafia family boss by now ), than I can just imagine how hard it must be to pay up for PinkyPie expenses.

Pesticides. See, there are thousands and thousands of different varieties of apples, because apple trees don't grow true to seed. (That means baby apples won't grow up to be anything like their parents.) 99% of these apples produce fruit you wouldn't want to eat- it could be too hard, too soft, too short-lasting, too bitter, too sour, too many seeds... the list goes on. So you have just a few varieties of apple that produce that sweet, tangy flavor everypony loves, and all of a sudden everypony is growing those. (using a process called grafting, or nowadays, cloning) Now, these apples are the same apples year after year after year for much longer than normal apple varieties stick around. (They usually die with the tree.) Think about that for a minute- weren't you taught that the natural world is always evolving? The insects and fungi and bacteria and viruses don't take a break just because we've found the perfect apple- they want in on the spoils! So they're changing as rapidly as possible to get the good, sweet stuff we all love, and so apple farmers like Applejack have to start spending money to protect their crop. That means pesticides, and fungicides, and insecticides, all in the name of protecting their livelihood from pests with ridiculous names like "Rosy Apple Aphid" and "Green Fruitworm". These creatures take a significant portion of the crop, and there's not a whole lot anyone can do about it besides, "spray, spray, spray." But wait, these are toxic chemicals! Applebloom plays in that orchard! So Applejack has to pay more for "biologically friendly" ways to combat the pests. Go back and watch that episode with the Parasprite infestation again. The Apple family seemed pretty well versed in protecting their crop from marauding critters, almost as if they'd done it before. They probably have.
And that's just the most significant cost. What about irrigation? Those apple trees need water just like any other plant, and it needs to be paid for, unless there's some river on the property I haven't seen. (And even if there is, PonyVille is going to want some of that water for the pipe systems to work.) And on top of all that, there needs to be enough money to feed the family, and make enough extra profit to save up for replacing that soggy old plow, or that soggy old roof, or Granny Smith's soggy old hip.
Silly Applejack, you should know all of this!

I don't know... I think Applejack would be amazed that I knew anything about farming and would be eager to discuss her livelihood. You know how some ponies can be- once you hit on the topic of their cutie mark, they just can't seem to stop talking. Of course in the process I'd need to be careful I don't hurt her feelings by disparaging her work, but I think she'd appreciate that I understand how much hard work goes into tending an apple orchard.
