Cider and a Show by SubjectNumber2394 Cider and a Show by SubjectNumber2394
There wasn't really that much material to work with this episode, and most of the ideas I had were taken in the first 24 hours! This one is a more 'What if' comic featuring Trixie and the Flim Flam brothers!

I actually felt bad for the Flim Flam brothers, they were running a legitimate business and won the competition fairly. Also that song was catchy as hell! If they had used the good cider afterwards or quickly made a fresh batch they would have been fine. Yeah they had there moments of being 'normal badguy routine', but these were few and far between. I guess I really like their character more than anything.

Also, we need Trixie back!

Edit: Some people have raised some points against the Flim Flam brothers, I thought I should clarify my views. Ultimatly I liked them as villans because they didn't do the typical 'bad guy stuff' that so many villans do these days. Gilda pushed ponies around, Trixie was full of herself, the Flim Flam brothers? They were in it for the business, to sell cider to very clear and easy market. At the end they couldn't sell anymore cider and left Ponyville.

As for the bet, YES they started making cider which wasn't drinkable, but think about this: They tried to sell that cider afterwards and were genuinely surprised when the customers didn't like it. While they probably realised it wasn't as good as the filtered cider, they still expected it to taste like cider, which was completely within the rules of the competition. Now while they might not be completely innocent, I still don't think they're 'bad' ponies, they just come off as the bad guys because they went up against our favourite farming family.

Their problem isn't so much out-and-out maliciousness as much as really bad business sense. If they were willing to negotiate down to 50-50 (or even 60-40), they still would've made way more money than they ever would've alone.

You're so naive to look up to the Flim Flam guys.  They used their jaunty tune as a technique to manipulate customers into buying their brand of cider - like Harold Hill in "The Music Man".
SteampunkPhoenix Featured By Owner Feb 17, 2014
Except that the Flim Flam brothers were actually able to back up their claim (for a while) AND were engaged in a legitimate business transaction. Harold Hill was planning on skipping town after everyone payed and didn't actually know how to play any instruments.

I prefer them as antagonists. They create the conflict but aren't (really) evil or "bad guys."

The Flim Flam Brothers are definitely not bad ponies, but they do come off as rather conceited and seem to care more about beating out competition than they do about selling cider. What people and ponies don't realize, or don't give them credit for, is the fact that they are legitimate business ponies. Sure, the Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 makes the cider for them, but that machine didn't invent itself. It didn't design itself and draw its own blueprints and specs, or buy its own parts, and the build itself. Flim and Flam did all that. They may not exert themselves much to make apple cider, but they certainly put a lot of work, not to mention probably hours of frustration, into their machine which turned out to work magnificently. So when they claim to be good at making apple cider, it is a legitimate claim. I hope they learned from their mistakes at Sweet Apple Acres, bought some land, grew their own orchard, started their own business, turned their machine into a factory, and became millionaires.

something I dont get about that episode is they went straight from "We might not have enough money to continue sweet apple acres" to "Now they own Sweet apple acres"
It never said that the land was actually part of the deal, they just said that they may have a bit of trouble in the future if they dont make enough money. Then after the compitition, Flim and Flam simply claimed the land

Heh, if anything I came away from that episode with feeling Applejack was a luddite and the true 'villain' of the episode especially after the letter.

Makes me want an ep where the farm gets in dire straits for reals, and Apple Bloom is the one who comes up with the solution, not AJ or Twilight. After Bridle Gossip I had a feeling that no matter what mark she gets AB would be the better business pony and probably wind up running the farm as a side project to whatever her mark is. Whenever an episode puts AJ in the wrong it's usually AB who comes out looking better. (Oddly, in this episode it was Granny. She liked the cider and probably would have figured out a deal if the younger Apples didn't butt in and start fighting with F&F leading to the chicken incident which led to the competition.)

If anything, this proves that Trixie and the Flim Flam Brothers were meant for each other. I hope they settle down into a bizarre, three person marriage that produces no children.

I wish they'd have more business sense. Imagine if they had actually been fair with The Apple Family instead of giving them an obviously bad model (after all, The Apple Family makes many other apple based products). They could get really rich off of the profits.

Instead, they get so worked up in trying to drive the Apple Family out of business, they let quality control slip away, and well, you know the rest. [link]
SubjectNumber2394 Featured By Owner May 24, 2012
In my head cannon they come from a business background and probably expected haggling of some sort. When the Apple family just declined it straight off they figured it would be better to just take over the market. Do they seam like the type that would offer a lower deal because their first offer was rejected? Instead the apple family shouldn't have let their pride and stubbornness get the better of them, they almost lost their farm and home (technically did) and still didn't learn anything from it.

Hm. I'm sorry for touching the same subject again, but I wanted to throw my two cents over here:

First, I kinda liked that their machine didn't produce faulty cider from the start. One would expect that to be the case on a story like that.
Secondly... the moment they became "antagonists" was the moment the Apples refused their deal. No talk, no "let's discuss this again", just "we've now become competitors". There was no way of knowing this beforehand, but their deal was actually bad for the Apples: they could produce 3 high-quality barrels of cider in the time the Apples could produce 1; since the machine had to be explicity powered by the brothers' magic, they couldn't "leave it on" overnight and would tire eventually, so they could only make it work during "normal" work hours, I assume. That way... there would be 3x the cider, but only 1/4th of the income for the Apples, effectively reducing their income by 25%. That's not even touching the case of limited apple supplies...
While I think the bet was stupid from Granny's behalf, they should have talked this through. There was no way the Apples could have accepted the deal as it was. =/

Er... sorry if that was long. <^^'
