I use far too many layers, this one had just under 200.

Once again eyes are my biggest enemies but I think I got Derpy's eyes looking ok. I decided to simplify the eyes a bit for this one.
First time drawing a stallion's head, they have an odd shape.

Composition wise I know you're supposed to split it into thirds but I decided to split it into 4 parts. From left to right the brightness changes from dark, to light, to dark, to light with the characters placed in the middle 2 sections against the background which would make them easiest to see.
